I didn't know it was a browser thing, so have just gone to change it in Chrome, and it's definitely spell-checking in UK English now.

There was a slight dog-leg in the process: I went to Settings > Show Advanced settings > Language > Language & input settings, where the box showed that the default was English (United States), with just 'English', underneath, along with a warning saying

Google Chrome cannot be displayed in this language
This language cannot be used for spell checking

But by clicking on the 'Add' button below, and selecting English UK from the drop-down list, English (United Kingdom) appeared below 'English', and when I clicked on that, it was fine. And now my checker runs in UK English.

Have carefully followed your instructions.... and... it...

...wroked!

Yay! Resulttt!!

Thank you.

Anyone who relies on spellcheck is a complete numpty and a dunderhead.
There must be a lot of us numpty's and dunderhead's around then, incidentally I see that there is a red line under both Spellcheck and numpty. Today we write or type fairly quickly, so we are bound to make more mistakes. Mind I admire those whose English Grammar and Spelling is always perfect but cannot help but wonder where they are wrong.

Not sure what you've missed but I just typed the above and it ignored the UK spellings and underlined the US ones. In Firefox if you right click an underlined word and go to the bottom but one item of the drop down box you have the option to change dictionary. This is how I spell check my awful French and German.

Haha, indeed there must be .

Spellcheck will not help you because: it will often but not always tell you you have made a mistake when you haven't; it also often but not always won't tell you you have made a mistake when you have. Can you explain how that's helpful?

Well as long as the spellchecker gets it right more often than it gets it wrong then for most people it will be helpful.
Of course if your spelling is perfect to start with then you will only ever see the 'incorrect' recommendations it makes and you will conclude that it is useless, but for mere mortals like me that's not the case.
