Not sure if there is a better place to stick this, Mods feel free to move!

I went along to the Spen Valley Greenway last Autumn, knowing that they were laying new water mains, but was surprised at the extent of the disruption. As a few months have now passed, would anyone know whether or not there has been an improvement?

We got on at Oakenshaw and hadn't got far before the diversion kicked in - and what a farce that turned out to be - we actually ended up travelling along a ginnell behind a row of terraced houses! I think we must have been lost, but the signs were rubbish.

I have read on-line some postings from August 08 suggesting that the work could take 3 years, but I cannot find anything much more recent other than a couple of Facebook groups saying how terrible it all is.

I'd avoid it for a while. All those diversions take you into the nicest bits of Dewsbury Moor etc...

If you're round that way and can get your bikes on a bike rack, how about the canal from Sowerby Bridge to Todmorden? All round Calderdale they've resurfaced all the towpaths to create bike friendly routes. You could get on at Elland and go all the way out to Sowerby Bridge via Copley... that's a nice ride.

.

As far as I know from local intelligence i.e. the kids that I teach, it's still not rideable.

Thanks for the update guys, and also for the tip about the canal towpaths around Calderdale - must give it a try! We have camped at Triangle in the past adjacent to a disused railway line - I wonder if that has been improved too? I feel a trip coming on!

That railway line past Triangle is rideable, but it's very boggy. It holds the water even in summer!

In Bradford. Quite a few of the boys that I teach make their way over to Low Moor to cycle along the Spen Valley Greenway.
Mrs Cube teaches at Hanson.... I take it that's the other side of the city to you!

Ha - yes I recall it being damp underfoot, and that was in the heat of summer!

A ginnell is like an alley-way which in this case ran the length of the back-gardens of a row of terraced houses. Not ideal cycling terrain!

But the Greenway does that from Ponderosa all the way to Ravenswharf! (only kidding, I know what you mean!);)
