Right ! I've now looked at the Front chain wheel and it has 4 yes 4 teeth missing ( wooops) Two next to each other on opposite sides ? I never even thought to look as the bike has only covered about 1000 miles about half what I have achieved from cheapy bikes in the past before needing a new chain or sprocks, That said I should have looked!

The rear cassete looks o.k but I think I will change it anyway the only problem is it a 32/8 8 speed jobbie in order to get a wide range of gears up till now I have been unable to find anything to match.

O.K so 11 /32 rear cassettes aren't that rare after all !!

Shouldn't be, I'm using a Sunrace 13-32 which is fine but I did have my eye on an 11... if it allows it, you may be able to change the bottom few rings for ones you do want
 
I don't think I've ever changed a chain without having to change the block or cassette as well! It's surprising how little a chain needs to be stretched, for it to have worn the cassette teeth to the point that they no longer mesh with a new chain. At least that's been my experience, all the way back to my first-ever derailleur bike! I know I could have saved money by replacing the chain earlier, but I'm a born procrastinator :blush: ...

But you can usually get away without replacing the front rings every time. If they are unbroken!

661-Pete's commets hold good in my experience EXCEPT that if the chain is replaced as soon as it's worn out the cassette/ block usually survives. I've managed 3 chains and 4500 miles on one cassette, but that's changing chains just before they're worn out. (I used to measure them, now use a Park Tools wear guage).

If there's any damage to the chainrings, as in your case, then IME the cassette will be a write off. The tools (chain whip and lock nut tool) seem expensive but should last well. Bicycle Tutor is good on how to use them. It's worth shopping around for chainrings/ chainsets. I found a 2:1 ratio in prices after I bent mine earlier in the year.

Edit: Forgot to say - That link looks like the SRAM ones I carry as emergency spares. I have used them as part of a chain in the past with absolutely no problems.
