 it never ceases to amaze me how we (well me at least) get so excited even by just the sound of its engine, let alone the sight of a Spitfire. You could never mistake that sound for anything else.
Sat upstairs, i heard it !!!, jumped up to see him waggle his wings over the showground about a mile away (there's a motor show on this weekend).
Jumped up  ...just to see a five second sight as he disappeared into the distance, five seconds and i sat back down smiling to myself.

How many things in life can you never ever get fed up of seeing ?

As with all self-help groups, you've made the first step, and I'm here to reassure you that you're not alone...

I'M THE SAME!!! :hyper: :wahhey:

we have a cracking position under the flightpath to Buckingham palace , so whenever Battle of Britain memorial flight does a flypast for the Queen we have a great view. this year we have the bonus of a loft window to hang out of to see it a little closer

Its that air cooled RR-Merlin engine! the sound is almost primal, i think it touches a bloke on some sort of sub-concious level and allows our inner caveman to be utterly astounded by that amazing sound!
that and the entire frame is a thing of beauty, when they said "they don't make em like they used to" i believe they were talking about the spitfire!

 that was close!!!

I went to a car show at Mallory park last year which was hosted by PPC magazine and they’re into crazy modifications, one of the writers has a Rover SD-1 with a 27L Merlin engine which is more or less a spitfire engine.

At the show they did ‘Ye Olde Drifting’ which had a pre-war Bentley with a W12 34L engine and he was drifting it and doing burnouts the noise was amazing…..

I got tired of seeing TV programmes. I don't miss them much.

Best flying military hardware: Vulcan on afterburners IMO. Like all the rock bands in all the world compressed into one big noise.

proud supporter of XH558 here. its a bit poorly at moment as a pair of engines went bang recently. anybody who wishes to help see this beauty back in the air is welcome to donate a few coins .

I was outside fettling the bike earlier... and heard "that noise". Lo and behold a Spitfire came over at (i'd guess) about 250ft.
I should say we're not far from Eastleigh (now Southampton International Airport) where K5054 (the prototype Spitfire) first took to the air, but we don't see that many of them.
