0500 this morning cycling into work on Preston Road, Brighton, ice and splat! A real 'off'.

One bruised and painful hip/buttock, ripped top and gloves and a helmet split the whole way through in two places......I was doing 15-20mph. Bike recovered to work, appears OK.

No way I was going to stay at work, sitting is interesting to say the least. Suggestions mentioning stabilisers were not met with much humour on my part.

Slightly depressingly whilst lying in a crumpled heap not one driver stopped, probably thought I was some drunken b*m from the clubs.

Good start to 2009! Be careful out there..

Funny, isn't it, that when someone crashes their bike people make jokes about it and just push it aside, but if you hit a patch of ice in your car and swerved off the road those very same people would be hovering around you making sure you're alright and fussing like no-body's business...

Oooh, unlucky mate. Hope you recover quickly and well.

I hit my first ice yesterday, luckily I was going slow. I went completely sideways at the lights at Bromley, lucky not to come off.

Thanks for the comments folks! Dudi you are so right about if it had been a car....
On the bright side I feel some shopping coming on to replace the damaged kit :-)

Glad you seem to be none too seriously hurt. But it would be worthwhile getting checked over.

Perhaps a letter to the local rag asking why they dont grit when ice is a known factor would be an option? And mention that you're glad a car wasn't in the process of an overtake or you'd be a gonna.

Seriously though, get well soon. I've had my fill of ice for the year. Came off a couple of years back myself when I slowly approached a junction and landed on my rumpus and lower back. Someone in a car did actually stop, though so there are good peeps out there.

Gawd I don't like ice,great fun as a kid because I could fall off and bounce back up but even the slightest fall now could be dodgy.

Oh, and regards the new lid... I found out after my recent off that if you have a Gio hat, they offer a like-for-like replacement for just under half the RRP.
Replaced my Monza for £22 and my LBS paid the postage and sorted it all out for me.

If you haven't got Giro now, may be something to consider for the future. only bad thing is, it takes a week to get the replacement...

I spent about 30 quid on an MET Duello, I think its called. Its red and matches my Kona Jake, lol! I had the previous Duello from a few years back but it smashed when I had me accident in september, So it did its job well
