Possibly stretching of the cables.
Is there an adjuster somewhere on the levers or in the cable run ? Usually turned anti-clockwise to tighten things up.
or could be wear of the pads - which can be replaced.
Pictures of your bike (brake pad area and brake levers) would help us narrow it down and provide more specific advice.
Caliper brakes have an adjuster at the cable side of the caliper.
If this doesn't work try adjusting the angle of the brake block in the caliper. They are usually held in with an allen bolt. Make sure they contact the rim correctly and do not rub on the tyre.
If your blocks are worn consider replacing them for new ones.
It could be the cable wearing through. Once a few strands break it feels spongy, a few more and very spongy, a few more and PING [Brown trouser moment].
It could be out of adjustment as others have said, and very worn pads are not going to help.
