Cavendish's competition has been announced in the final shortlist.

Mark Cavendish (cycling), Darren Clarke (golf), Alastair Cook (cricket), Luke Donald (golf), Mo Farah (athletics), Dai Greene (athletics), Amir Khan (boxing), Rory McIlroy (golf), Andy Murray (tennis), Andrew Strauss (cricket).

Trying to take an objective view, you can't see anyone that's achieved as much as Cav in that list. I know Rory Mcllroy is very popular but i find golf more duller than the most dullest thing imaginable. I'm hoping the golfing vote will be split between Rory, Clarke and Donald.

My vote would be 1 - Cav, 2 - Mo Farrah, 3 Al Cook.

surely this must be a one horse race? If he doesn't win then cycling will never be considered main stream!

However, as this is CC, and not GolfChat, I would say that

Unfortunately cycling really isn't mainstream yet. Heart says I'd love Cav to win. Head says unlikely.

Has to be Cav

The golfers did well but a British golfer winning a major is a pretty regular event...a British cyclist winning the rainbow and green jerseys isn't

Mo Farah in 2nd for me

I agree with all of the above...particularly with how dull SPOTY can be. The interviews are banal.

Cav desrves to win - none of the others have reached the levels of achievement he has. And the GB team from the worlds should be up for team of the year.

Darren Clarke will win, he won the Open (televised on the BBC), and with the emotion involved due to the loss of his wife he'll get the general public vote.

Golf vote split three ways, athletics and cricket two ways . . .

Cav could sprint straight through the middle of them and take it from nowhere.
Get out and vote.

If you are not in a sport that isn't shown on the Beeb, forget it. Same old same old.

the bookies seem to have Cav as favourite! Clarke close 2nd with the others nowhere. Maybe it could be Cav's year, get voting:thumbsup:

I let this one get to me every year. My personal choice is for people who dominate at what they do so Cav is well deserved. Andy Murray again. Nothing against him but he isn't at the pinnacle of his sport.

Looking at the breakdown from the media nominations there are some interesting choices. The Manchester Evening News nominating three Manchester based footballers (one who has retired) who aren't British and don't qualify. Very clever. They should be removed from the process next year. To think I baulked at Nuts magazine getting the vote. They did manage to nominate Alistair Brownlee and Cav as well as eight other British sports people so I can't complain too strongly.

Now, no women. Absolute rubbish! If we had no female world champions then maybe so but this is not the case. Once again Chrissie Wellington is ignored and Helen Jenkins is another. There are guaranteed to be more deserving women in sports I don't follow to add to this.

Hope Cav wins but more of the same from the BBC this year. It's usually a terrible program and athletes taking part in sports shown on the BBC get a big advantage. I stopped caring many years ago that the BBC loses sports rights hands over fist as they just don't cover the ones they have that well with a few exceptions.
