Apparently there are 40 bikes painted yellow around Sheffield for the Tour de France.

As pointed out in another thread, these are a bit odd as they are generally mountain bikes, and perhaps they had useable parts. As someone who rides an 'old but not vintage' bike I suspect it's only a matter of time before I notice one that under the paint is a 'better' bike than mine.

But all that aside, I thought it'd be interesting to see how many we can spot between us. According to the bloke dropping this one off, there are 40.

So:

Number 1: Bike rack at Waitrose

That Waitrose bike rack often sports a bike with its fork on backwards. Apparently it has been pointed out to the owner, who seems to like it that way.

Waitrose attracts a better class of eccentric.

Anyone else seen any? I noticed one at Ecclesall Woods the other day, but didn't get a picture as I was driving. And there is one in the woods somewhere I believe.

There's one at the top of Fargate, and one outside Leopold Square. Sorry but no photos.

Looking at the poxy lock, soon, some local scrote will gnaw through it and have it away.
The guy that dropped it off was waiting whilst Waitrose found their own lock so he could take this one away - I presume so they can get rid of it without him coming back after the TdF.

Whilst I appreciate what they were trying to do, whoever signed off on ruining 40 bicycles wants a word with themselves.

@KneesUp The one in your picture looks like a Raleigh Activator - one of my first bikes.

As posted on the other thread these will be BSO's which would go for scrap and after use as display/publicity will then go for scrap. No usable cycles will have suffered in the making of these displays as they will all be unwanted.
FWIW I "saved" 4 unwanted frames from Cyclemagic in Leicester and purchased 1 frame from them (that's where my 653 frame came from and I'm not saying what I paid for that) and all were built into cycles which I still own including a 21" Raleigh Pursuit built up for my Nephew.

IMO they'd have been better off donating the bikes somewhere like here and creating a decent piece of street art which has proper relevance to the event and doesn't take up bike parking space.

There's not a lot that doesn't look usable beneath the paint in your pic either.

At least they've tried something I suppose, and to the non-cyclist it may be seen more positively. Have you found any others yet?

Looks a bit like a Raleigh Activator - Gas pipe MTB with basic elastomer suspension fork.

They'll be on ebay after the tour stages pass, just like the spray painted London 2012 bikes in the opening ceremony.

Apparently, all the "official" yellow bikes in Knaresborough are going to be restored and shipped off to Africa - so I'm told. However, lots of people have been buying old bikes and painting them yellow to join in. I wonder what is going to happen to these bikes?
I have been looking for a bike to do up and twice I've gone into second hand bike shops over the last few weeks only to be told "we had just what you are looking for but yesterday someone bought it to paint yellow"!

It's not just Sheffield. I saw a few in Ripon this afternoon and on the road from there to Pately Bridge. One looked like a penny farthing made from a tractor tyre.
