Hi

So i have a quick question.

A couple months ago my pedals started moving when cycling (jumping forward) but at the time didnt realise what was going on, i asked a friend and it turned out the bolt on the crank was loose.
However i bought some new pedals now they are squeaking when i put force on them (up hills or standing starts etc) i took the pedals off and put new grease on them and the squeaking stopped for a week or so but now its back (well starting to but getting worse each day)

Would you say that:

A:Pedals are faulty (although i bought them a couple months ago from new)
B The crank thread is gone (when i took pedals off a few months ago metal bits and a funny smell was on the tread, i took them off as soon as getting back as it was so noisy people were looking)

Thanks for your help

If you were riding with loose crank bolts for any time it is likely that you have wrecked the crank spindle - if it is a square taper one. I would guess this is a more likely cause of squeaking than faulty pedals. Square tapers, by nature are slightly narrower at the bolt end so that when you tighten the crank nut, it pushes the crank harder onto the spindle. If you were riding it loose, it may have rounded the edges of either the spindle or your crank arms (or both)
It's worth taking the crank arms off, giving them and the spindle a good clean (never use grease on the square taper) and then put them back on and ensure the bolt/nut is done up tightly.
It is also worth taking your chain off the front chain ring and revolving the crank and also try wobbling it side to side. If it isn't smooth, is noisy, or has side to side movement it is probably the bottom bracket at fault.
