SRAM Apex derailleur max cassette

My road-ish gravel-ish type bike has an older SRAM Apex system, it looks like it's been dropped a hundred times and hit with a rock a few times for good measure, but it works.

I currently have an 11-32 cassette (50/34 front rings). That doesn't give me high enough gearing for negotiating hills whilst loaded with my camping gear, two water bottles etc... I'm curious what is the max cassette size this can take, and what might be a suitable replacement derailleur?

My last bike had a 10 speed Tiagra setup, and I added an 11-36t cassette and I changed the rear mech to a Shimano XT M772 Shadow 9 which worked fine. I could get by with 36 if can handle that, but 40 or 42 would be ideal on the cols.

Information for old Apex is spotty, as searches keep throwing up stuff about the Apex 1 which I believe is a different system.

11-32 I believe (wifli medium cage)

I don’t think there’s a compatible bigger rear road bike mech as discussion here

Maybe you can add a wolf tooth extender?
Or an MTB rear mech as suggested in …
You can however use any of the ten speed SRAM MTB rear mechs interchangeably on the 10 speed
