I need a new chain and probably a new cassette too. I've been looking at SRAM cassettes, do they fit Shimano hubs and do they need their own special lock ring tool or will a shimano one do?

I've been running SRAM cassettes on a shimano hub using a shimano tool no problem.

cheers,
I'll probably order one for the commuter; sram only do 11-32, 8 speeds from what I've seen so I'll have to consult Sheldon to see if I have to alter chain length (I'm using a 11-34 at the mo)

SRAM are totally interchangeable with Shimano in my experience. I've been using SRAM PG850 cassettes on my road bike and MTB as replacements for the original Shimano for some years and thoroughly recommend them.

Your chain length will be fine

I'm interested in what Steve Austin said. From the view of an assortment forums and tests it would appear he is justified in his statement. Even though the cassettes may be compatible they just don't have that fine edge of the shift. From a point of view of material I think that Shimano are longer lasting. I have decided on a Dura Ace 7900 cassette rather than an Sram Red one.

However let's hear what some of you think?

I came to the conclusion that for 7sp MTB cassettes and 9sp road cassettes, that the SRAM cassettes were considerably lighter and better finished than the equivalent-price Shimano cassette, and shifting was just as good.

But then, I always run KMC or SRAM chains and wouldn't touch a Shimano one with a bargepole...

+1 for Shimano cassettes - I even like the high end shimano chains!

I do like the SRAM power link though.

cassettes don't shift very well, or last as long as Shimano
Chains are chains are chains, but Sram are noisy and don't last as long before stretching
Shifters and dérailleurs may shift slightly better due to different cable pull ratio, but gripshift has no place on any bike.
Have you seen the price of Sram?

I don't expect everyone to agree, but if i was recommending products, I can think of many different manufacturers to suggest before scam. Shimano, Campag, KMC spring to mind ;)
