Are these compatible?
I mean, sram and shimano cassettes are interchangeable are they not? Therefore the derailleurs must be compatible with each of the cassettes, which means the shifters must all pull the derailleur the same distance to make the shifts...
...so why wouldnt sram shifters and shimano derailleurs be interchangeable?

(thinking of replacing my ultegra shifters for sram rival/force shifters)

They're not. The lever pull different amount of cable, and the parralelograms are different in the mechs. It won't work.

Cassettes and chains are both interchangeable

Sram shifters will only work with Sram rear mechs
Shimano shifters will only work with Shimano rear mechs

Front mechs will work with both Shimano and Sram

edit: thats for both road and MTB, although there are a couple of sram flat bar MTB shifters that work with Shimano. rocket and attack iirc
