I have a Raleigh roadster cycle from the 1950 s. The tube on the saddle tube which contained two batteries, well can anyone tell me how this worked . Did one have a double switch on headlight in order to turn on battery lights when at a stand still. Or was there some sort of relay that switched over when the dynamo was stopped. I am restoring this bike so would appreciate any info on this

You dont say what model you have but look at this 1951 catalogue there's something about a 'filter switch' which looks like it keeps the lights on when stopped.

It's a long time since I had to work on one but I seem to recall they were automatic, battery took over when slow or stopped.

Many thanks cyclepos. I would say that my bike is a superb tourist , it has a full chain guard and it has the battery holder on the saddle tube. I'm keen on getting the lighting back to original. I'll read through the link . Thanks very much .
