This is my first year commuting, 17 miles each way. Now we are in the dark on the way home, the rain has started and its getting cold.

What I have noticed is that the regular people I see each way every day have started to disappear !

Some mornings its not much fun, and getting out the door on the bike is not eay, but when I get to work I have such a sense of achievement that I am so glad I did.

I started in June and this Friday I hit 3,000 miles already.

yep, a lot of the fair weather cyclists are slowly disappearing on my commute also. At the height of summer the A21 would resemble a grand tour peleton some days. With the onset of colder and darker weather only a few remain.

Nice one on the mileage Kev.. well done.

I'm seeing more cyclists than before, mainly due to a change in work time means I now commute closer to 'rush hour'. I was lucky if I saw 1 other rider when on 5am ride.

I must admit I like the round town cycling, with all the people buzzing round, like the M25 for cyclists in Cambridge down a road called Bridge Street some days !

indeed. It makes me laugh when people comment about the dark, rain etc etc. Usually it's fat unfit motons who are the most vocal.

at the age of 43 I am more fitter now then I had been for the last 20 years. All due to cycling.. and bloody love it.

Aye, I've got one of those at work, classic comments ranging from "enjoy your swim home" to "looks like it's raining out there". I enjoy passing him in the queue as he drives the mile to his house ..

I'm all for hardiness, but last night was just crushingly miserable. Freezing cold, dark, and torrential rain. The rain had washed all the random bits of tree that the wind had detatched into the (by now blocked) gutters, and it was seriously unsafe to go above 14 mph in parts, with my wheels slipping on submerged bits of branch at random moments.

Of course, slowing down makes the motons take the p**s ever more blatantly with tailgating and unsafe overtaking. By the time I got home I was so fed up that I've resolved to do the short commute for the rest of the week (train, with 2 miles of Brompton riding either side).

Well, when I got up it was p'ing it down. By the time I'd have got my waterproofs on and rode the two miles to work and got dried and changed at work (with no proper changing facilities either), it would be quicker to get the bus - so I did - for the first time in years. Now that was an experience, I've totally lost the knack of walking down the bus whilst it's on the move - it was nearly a comedy moment when he put the brakes on ;)

I'd asked the Mrs to buy me a brolly for such eventualities, which she did, but she thought it was for use ON the bike - she had visions of me tootling along with a brolly over my shoulder on my bike.

I've been pretty lucky since I started bike commuting a few months ago - only getting wet on the way home which I don't mind. Dark and cold doesn't bother me either - or a light rain - it's just the heavy stuff. But I guess I'll need to get moving a bit earlier to get togged up - just hardly seems worth it for a short ride.

I'll be walking home tonight.
