Steel Classic 531 Pro or Carbon?

Hi

Just signed up to the forum and have a question.

I have a classic 531 Pro frame with the original Chorus groupset on - dating back to 1986/7. It's in pretty good nick, although the frame could do with a respray. I've recently got the bike back on the road (after about 10 years since I last rode it) after shelving my Butler hybrid.
Although, the bike feels great and so much more responsive when putting the power through, the one thing I wanted was more modern gears rather than the downshifters (not indexed either). However, the incompatibility between modern kit - especially STI/Ergo shifters - means it's more a case of giving the bike a complete upgrade - even having to get the stays splayed too.

Anyhow, after talking to people there seems to be a split between keeping the classic frame and upgrading it with more modern kit or just keeping it on one side and going over to a complete new bike - which after looking around is not massively more expensive than the upgrade. By new bike I mean carbon frame and Athena set.

It's a real dichotomy, although I love my old faithful, but the modern carbon frames look gorgeous and match the latest groupsets to a tee. I'm only using it for runs and probably the odd 10/25 mile time trial - if I'm up to it.

What does anyone think?

Cheers

Paul

I had a 531 frame restored (by me) racer. Recently got a modern sub 9KG carbon road bike. They ride like nothing else and mines not one of the uber expensive carbon's. I love it! Get one!

Personally I would keep the steel in its current form for when you fancy a bimble or a leisurely ride. Then get a nice carbon for everything else. I have both a modern steel and a carbon and I am grateful for both as one is nice and solid and the other just floats.

keep the 531 and upgrade it or keep the one in question in original spec and buy a new 531 with modern kit on or build from frame upwards to spec you want or need , dont forget carbons melt when exposed to rain water

I love steel frames so no surprise that I find an upgraded 531 frame lovely to ride. I have two old 531 built bikes and every time I take them for a ride I enjoy the bikes. I also love my modern Ti Van Nicholas bike.

So my view is that the OP should keep the bike and upgrade it if possible.
