Hi
Just signed up to the forum and have a question.
I have a classic 531 Pro frame with the original Chorus groupset on - dating back to 1986/7. It's in pretty good nick, although the frame could do with a respray. I've recently got the bike back on the road (after about 10 years since I last rode it) after shelving my Butler hybrid.
Although, the bike feels great and so much more responsive when putting the power through, the one thing I wanted was more modern gears rather than the downshifters (not indexed either). However, the incompatibility between modern kit - especially STI/Ergo shifters - means it's more a case of giving the bike a complete upgrade - even having to get the stays splayed too.
Anyhow, after talking to people there seems to be a split between keeping the classic frame and upgrading it with more modern kit or just keeping it on one side and going over to a complete new bike - which after looking around is not massively more expensive than the upgrade. By new bike I mean carbon frame and Athena set.
It's a real dichotomy, although I love my old faithful, but the modern carbon frames look gorgeous and match the latest groupsets to a tee. I'm only using it for runs and probably the odd 10/25 mile time trial - if I'm up to it.
What does anyone think?
Cheers
Paul
