Hi
i have bought a Specialised Tarmac, but because i have back problems and am 61 i need to raise the bars,
i have considered a stem riser :-

can i do this with a carbon fork ? is the fork strong enough ?

Why not use a high-rise stem from a mountain bike?

The question must be asked though - why buy a bike with a short head tube and full-on race geometry if you need to ride in an upright position?

Maybe speak to the dealer where you bought the bike? Or there's a Specialized concept store in Chelmsford

thanks guys, i bought the bike from e-bay it was a good price so could not resist, i have been riding a Boardman Aluminium bike with the stem riser fitted, tops of handle bars are level with seat & thought if i get a Carbon bike with 105 shifters it would be a step up, only now thinking i cannot ride this new bike , it may end up back on e-bay at this rate, i have been off sick for the last 5 weeks with my back and i am missing riding any type of bike at present.
Regards
Kim

It will not be a good idea to clamp that around a carbon steerer - no no no...sounds like the bike is just wrong for you given your problems - probably need somehting a bit more upright such as a flat bar road bike. Might be an idea to get a pro bike fit done

People have had nasty accidents as a result of stem or steerer failure, so it is not something I'd recommend for a carbon steerer. If you bought a new fork it would maybe arrive uncut, and then you'd get some extra height, but that would be a major outlay. Check beforehand what the uncut length is if you go for a new fork.

You'd have done better with a Roubaix, which has a more upright position. I've got a 2013 Roubaix in excellent condition that I'd consider swopping with you if the same size 56 frame and comparable spec and condition.

if you like the bike maybe just get a new fork with a longer steerer,as this ouzo pro on my ribble commuter, stem is spaced out quite a way, probably too much, but it's still solid enough for what i do

The Specialized stem can be fitted upside down giving an upwards angle and this can even be increased further by reversing the wedge shaped shim between the stem and the steerer. There's a huge range of adjustment possible.
