I would have guessed that a cyclist would have been classed as a foot passenger taking a bike.

That as it turns out is exactly what it is.

So there was no need for this post at all.

Nope, as above cyclists have to declare they are taking a bike on board which goes with vehicles. On stena line cyclists also pay more than foot passengers.

OF course you pay more. You pay for the bike and you pay for a foot passenger. If you are taking a car, you are still a foot passenger. You mode of transport is an add on. There is no seperate class of passenger called a cyclist. You are a foot passenger.

Stena and DFDS do indeed charge foot, cyclist and vehicle driver/passenger as different classes of passenger. I don't remember what other companies do.

Not quite. You are not allowed to wheel a cycle onto the passenger decks. It's classed as a vehicle, you've to inform them you intend to take one onboard. And it legally has to go on the vehicle decks.

Stena Holyhead to Dublin. Bike was taken from you at Holyhead and returned at Dublin. This is how it was handled. Found Stena to be less customer friendly than Brittany Ferries but on some routes you don't have a choice.

Obvious, but incorrect: anyone trying to take anything other than a folded bike on as a foot passenger will be told they booked the wrong class of ticket, at best, if allowed to travel at all.
