It could go in Fitness and Health but I don't use one for that reason, rather I just have a cheap one (xiaomi) and monitor it daily.
I average something like 16k steps a day at work, lots of walking and TBH my legs and feet ache at the end of it. One day I hit 23k, sometimes hitting 18 or 19k, a low day would be 14k.

Is it a lot ? How about you ?

Nothing like that if I'm working, desk job, unless I actually go out, probably 5 or 6k, less if working from home (I use a Fitbit)

I've got a dodgy foot, walking much more than 10k at the mo leaves it swollen and very pained

The problem;em is that they are inconsistent

I used to use a FitBit one, and it was fine. I was trying totting up steps with no issues. However it depended where it was worn.

If I wore it on the waist then it did not record cycling, so there was a difference of 3 - 4000 steps per day.

Unfortunately the clip was not the most secure and I lost it, so decided to upgrade to a Garmin Vivosmart which again was fine, but the strap kept breaking, so it was returned and I replaced it with a Fitbit Charge2

I have no problems apart from the fact that it is wrist mounted, so again does not record cycling

Then we were stopped from wearing watches at work, so the uni`t is attached to a belt loop

My figures are now well down, not because I am not doing them, but because of the accuracy of recording. Mind you the good news is that my trousers have a reasonable heart rate

So....

If I am on a weekend I average about 10 -11 k
On a work day, about 3 k travelling work, and 4-6k at work
When on holiday or out with the camera , it can be anything upon to 16k

My maximum was a busy day exploring Reykjavik with was 25k

I use a Garmin 15 - had it at least 3 years now. Replaced an early fitbit as wasn't up to being worn at work. Plus having somethng on your wrist that doesn't tell the time as well seemed pretty pointless.
Wearing something on your wrist to count steps seems a little odd to me anyway - pushing a trolley around a supermarket counts virtually nothing as hands are on the trolley and not moving. Some sort of ankle based one would seem better and probably count steps better, but not sure if I'd want to walk round looking like I've been tagged.

5k at best, but that's only recorded if I have the phone on me.

Just bought my wife the Garmin Vivioactive HR, which wasn't cheap, but got £50 off RRP at Halfords. She also has the Xaiomi, but wants one for swiming, hence the Garmin.

I must admit I've been wondering about getting one... but I'm not sure how effective they would be... I've got the thing on my phone that sort of records steps, but it believes I do an average of 4 and a half thousand steps daily, and today I've done 18 total (despite been in and out of the house, gardening, DIY etc because I wasn't carrying my phone). So if I was wearing a tracker I've no opidea how many i would get?

We did a thing through work a couple of years ago. There was an additional calculation for cycling as the pedometer didn't count it properly. At the time I was cycling to/from work (total 10 miles) and walking for an hour at lunchtimes. I was averaging 16,000 - 18,000 steps a day according to the system we were using.

Ankle based, but it is "tag like" and has a different approach. It does not record overall steps, but is more about specific workouts

My daughter uses one of these bits of technology. However, somewhat reversing @Cunobelin 's experience, when she's pushing her youngest one's buggy, it decides that she's cycling. Perhaps it senses a lack of movement in the arms, with increased vibration, and a raised heart rate. (She does walk unreasonably quickly, it has to be said.

I think the suspicion they're all somewhat inaccurate holds true, it has occurred to me to fit mine to my ankle and see if it records differently...but mine won't fit round my ankle. I really should activate the fitness tracker on my smartphone and see if they tally within a reasonable amount.....then you wonder....how accurate is the app on a smartphone.
You can't win. I take consolation that the readings I get are more or less consistent week after week so I at least have something to work with.

36000 steps is my highest in a day..but i regularly do 25000 + a day and maybe 15-20 flights of stairs.

There not too bad ..when i use the lawn mower i will often count 500 steps and its usually about right on tally.

Me and the wife often walk togeather and again were very close on steps..similar step so usually only a small difference.

I have a fitness tracker app on my phone (it came with it) but as I do not have my phone on me in the classroom, I have no idea how many steps I do. The world and his wife seem to have Fitbits strapped to their arms these days - they seem quite expensive to me for what is essentially a gimmick.
The conductor of the brass band I play for has one strapped to his conducting arm - I wonder what the hell that records as he's waving his arms about!

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Fitbit One. It registers cycling when I carry it in my jersey pocket, or in its own pocket clasp.

Currently on 22,621 "steps" for the day.

Mrs W uses a different Fitbit, designed to be worn around the wrist in a band, but she's sewn an ankle strap out of elastic. And manages 10,000 steps a day.
