I really enjoyed him in Blackadder and Jeeves and Wooster.
He's been up front and honest about his mental health etc and I applaud that.
No-one's perfect, everyone has their faults....so what if he is a bit pompous etc?
IMO it makes him more 'human' than your average celeb/actor.
Jeeves and Wooster, I'd forgotten about that. Made P.G. Wodehouse readable. I just imagined those two as characters.

He went to the same school as me.

Never met him, like him a lot, like his books and A Bit Of was one of the funniest programmes ever. An acquaintance met him on London Street Norwich and asked for a photo, Fry was patient and kind and suggested a better angle to make a more composed shot. He didn't have to, my acquaintance was nobody special, but he was very kind. Seriously, watch this and try not to laugh:

When he's not being a pompous luvvie he's great... like the time he took on the Catholic Church during the 'intelligence2' debate.

I get him muddled up with User in my mind.
Does this help?
He's a good actor. I too admire his mental health work. I love it when he hosts the BAFTAs, he's hilarious. His position in the meeja means his more stupid pronouncements get a lot of air, so he's always going to be a bit Marmite. He believes in kindness, but as coffeejo says, he's very flawed. OK by me.

What really annoys me is when he's described (usually by the Guardian) as a polymath. Being a comedian that is familiar with Apple products does not make you a polymath.

Edit 1: (Wikipedia's examples of polymaths includes Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Hildegard von Bingen,Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Galileo Galilei, Benjamin Franklin, Rabindranath Tagore,Paolo Sarpi,[2]Nicolaus Copernicus, Francis Bacon, Walter Russell, Thomas Browne,Jose Rizal, Michael Servetus,[3]Ibn Khaldun, Ibn al-Haytham,[4]Avicenna, and Omar Khayyám.[5] No mention of Stephen Fry)
I've just edited Wikipedia to show him as a Polymath. That's how Wikipedia works, isn't it?
