Stiff headset

One of my bikes seems to get a stiff headset (behave yourselves) when left unridden for a few days.

The last couple of times this happened, I squirted some GT85 into the headset area and re-tightened all the bolts. It's fine when ridden daily but as soon as I leave it for a few days, the handlebars develop a strong resistance to turning.

The headset is the standard one that came with the bike and done about 7k miles.

Is it on it's way out?

GT85 into a headset. oops. You need to pull it to bits, clean it and regrease soon. Check if the races and bearings are pitted, if so, it's new headset time.

What type of headset - integrated or external ?

No idea. It's on a 2007 rigid MTB so relatively modern.

    EDIT: Does this help?

    Aheadset Slimstak w/semi-cartridge bearings, sealed

You should be able to just buy new bearing cartridges, but you may need a LBS to tell you the exact ones. Not too expensive and with luck it will just be the bearing cartridges that are needed.
