You don't get full leverage when you're on the hoods - only when in the drops.

Also V-Brakes are indecently powerful by comparison anyway!

If you want truly terrifying brakes, first ride out on my new CAADX with Tektro cantilever units and stock pads a couple of weeks back and I nearly spanked it a few times by not having enough braking. Clarkes pads and a lot of adjustment have made them much better but they're still nowhere near as good as the calipers on my CAAD8.

Koolstop Salmon pads are a big improvement over stock pads, shimano 105 calipers are another improvement. For the OP, invest in decent pads. It could save your life on that commute.
