It is an issue. I've already had a stone ping off the brand new frame as some driver drove past. I've never had a stone hit me in the face but I'm aware it could happen. I had an apple fall on my head out of a tree.

I tend to wear sunglasses anyway as a lot of kids throw stuff at cyclists in Arbourthorne. I'd prefer some more beefy visors but never found where sells them.

They are chipping all the roads around where i live at the moment,
I got hit on the finger that hurt like hell , but it's the pinging noise the
the stone chips make when they hit the bike frame that bother me the most, i can
imagine paint chipping off everytime that happens, oh and i don't think
anyone slows down to 20 mph either

Almost flying debris, one day last summer, to my great surprise, a bird flew out of a hedge & hit me on the side of the head & sent me flying across the road. Scared the life out of me, I was glad that no-one was around to have seen it!

Ha ha ha ha... :0)

We get chased by dogs all the time. There is one farm that has a Jack Russel, yappy dog we call it, and the little sh** runs after you barking at your ankles. You try to get past the gate before it sees you. Last week the two guys I was with shot ahead and tooted their horns as they passes the gate! Dog was out to meet me!

B******'s! ;0)

There's a BS standard for safety specs, I don't know if any sunglasses manufacturers conform to this but I'm fairly sure that at least some Oakleys do.
If not, a cheap pair of safety specs (as long as they conform to the above) are rated to stop objects entering the eyes of a certain weight or size.

Mind you, if I'm going to get clumped in the eye with something hard and sharp enough to shatter polycarbonate, i'd rather that lense was there to at least slow it down a bit!

do you mean these kind of things? :

Friend of mine was hit on the shoulder with a golf ball! Says it hurt a lot. I've had golf balls land near my twice.First time it happened I couldn't figure out what it was, just heard something 'thunk' into the grass.

I've been hit in the face with small stones but nothing that did any damage. I used to wear RayBan sunglasses that have glass lenses but after it was pointed out how iffy that could be of they smash I've switched to plastic ones I got from Woolworth's. Work fine and cost about 50p. I have no idea why people pay £30 for a pair of cycling glasses.
Wearing cheap plastic sunglasses for long periods of time will not do any favours for your eyesight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think if i were to be hit in the eye by something, i would prefer one stone rather then slivers of glass/plastic which would slice right through it and destroy the eye. Fingers crossed nothing happens.

ps, saw a youngish guy, late 20s on his bike last night in Kennington, wearig what looked like a german style WW2 helemt!!!!! it was leather and obvisouly new, but looked "interesting"

Ok I exagerate slightly ;). Mind you, have you hit one whilst enthusiastically wringing the throttle on an R1? ;)

No, you can get them a lot more subtle than that ;)

I have a pair that actually look just like cycling glasses.

UV protection, usually not very good in cheap ones.

Check out some of the Bolle Safety Specs - they have UV protection (even clear) and are impact resistant.

Emmm, no. But then I don't actually know what an R1 is.

Why would cheap sunglasses be bad for your eyes?

Sorry, I thought you were a biker for some reason.

Anyway, it's one of these.
