Stopped by the police as I arrived at work and offered a free lock!

I work at a university and there has been a lot of cycle thefts on campus, more so than usual. Most of these have been bikes secured with cable locks. As I was riding across campus a friendly policeman stopped me and offered me a free D-lock in exchange for a cheap cable lock. I only had a D-lock on my frame a very heavy duty lock in my pannier and wasn't about to give those up. Luckily I found an old cheap cable lock in my desk drawer and went back for a swap. My new D-lock is now fastened to my hack MTB which I use to commute on days I need to go into town at lunchtime or go somewhere I need to leave a bike locked out in the open. It's good to see positive action by the police and my employer . They also offer bike chipping and continue to sell quality locks at a heavily subsidised price.

That's nice of them!

I also work for a Uni - in the process of sorting out a Bay in the secure Cycle Shed on Campus for Staff.. I was advised not to lock it up anywhere else as it would be likely to be stolen or messed about with...

God gods, I wish I went to your uni, the Sheffield stands outside our building are only secured to the pavement by sheer force of will let alone giving us anything to secure our bikes to them with. Although even with a top quality lock they could steal the stand with the bike attached.

It's pretty good and the people who make the decisions are making some very positive steps. We're pretty lucky in that respect. I won't say where I work, my on line activity might get found out . The give away was only happening last Friday. We have lots of sheffield stands (bolted down) and some covered space but we are at capacity. There are plans afoot to increase the amount of secure storage on campus.

The uni I went to was pretty rubbish. I left my bike at home and walked to uni as I wouldn't have a bike for long otherwise. That was some time ago though.
