Since the lack of enforcement of mobile phone use by drivers appears to be resulting in the widespread ignoring of the law; I have an idea.

Surely the technology exists to block phones if they are moving at a certain speed, in this case it could be above 4 mph so that they could still be used by walkers. This would be disabled if the phone was connected to, and being used in conjunction with, a working blue tooth device (although my personal opinion is that the main distraction is the actual conversing rather than holding the phone).

As a reminder and to encourage obeying the law, phones held to the users ear should emit an electrical charge directly into the ear. Let's start at 10 volts at 10 mph, increasing by 1 volt for every mph the phone is moving at. Thirty volts should provide enough discomfort to be a deterrent :hyper:.

The problem arises for passengers in cars/trains/buses who want to use phones. Perhaps they could put up with the inconvenience and spare their fellow passengers from being subjected to the details of their personal calls?

Isn't there some system in Germany that blocks phones in cars?

But it is legal for passengers to use them.

I would like the law changed so that anyone could report it, it would be worth getting a camera. And although the ones chatting really annoy me, I'm more worried by those texting and typing on social media sites.

And they don't seem to be aware of how obvious it is to other drivers..... Imagine if you had cameras filming the traffic then displaying the bad behaviour on a large screen, whilst simultaneously sending the fine direct to the owner of the car! (I'll carry on dreaming for a few moments more)

The reality is that having phones in cars saves more lives than it loses. Apparently quicker response times of emergency services saves more lives than is lost from drivers illegally on the phone. Too many issues with passengers needing them, other devices and systems that use data, eg satnav on phones etc.

I think a far simpler solution would be making the penalty 9 points and £1000 and develop a system for cameras to recognise drivers on handheld.

I've got a simpler idea!

Police enforcement officers go out and about in the local community from time to time. There, like the rest of us, they will witness phone using, speeding, incompetent driving and then.............wait for it..............they could actually, (stay calm) ...............prosecute offenders!

I know, crazy isn't it? But it could just work.............

I went to london on a coach on tuesday so I had a perfect view into cars and the cabins of trucks..... everyone was using them. But in fairness to them they were only doing 60mph on the motorway. I don't understand how you can be driving a lorry weighing 10+ tonnes and not think your full attention should be on the road.

In between here and there
Put a copper on a bike in slowing moving traffic with a camera and they would have a field day.

I think it should be treated and punished in similar way as drink driving. There was a time when drink driving was only seen as a risk of getting caught. There is no stigma to mobile use while driving at the moment

If you want to you can influence policing in one area..... He has currently got a survey monkey poll asking about the priority ..... I voted for phone.... But it closes tonight!

(And he's often patrolling on his bike)

It'll never catch on . It would involve paying money to recruit some people to wear the uniform. The ones we already have are too few in number and bogged down in mountains of paperwork, so they have no time for stuff like routine patrols.

I see a fair few obviously text/facebook/twitter/whatever at traffic lights with a glance in the rearview mirror. Concerns me more when they are still rolling to a stop behind me but not actually looking :cursing:
Crushing cars seems a bit extreme, but I'm sure some sort of modified can crusher would fit into the boot of a Police car. Caught on a mobile - no points, no fine - just hand the offender a bag containing a small cube of what used to be their phone. Inconvenience and cost of replacement might get the message through.
