Storage heater pedulums

I've just noticed that my automatic Dimplex storage heaters have pendulums hanging down at the back. Are they anything to do with the thermostat and if so am I right in thinking that the lower they hang the more heat the heater will put out?

.. or is your system so old that it forms part of the timer mechanism?

The short answer seems to be 'yes' - I pulled the pendulum down and the heater put out a lot more heat.
