I've just taken a giant leap into the 21st century and bought a couple of those phones that tell you who'se ringing before you pick up the hands set.
This was prompted my Mrs BG getting fed up answering calls from certain relatives who she's "hounded" by, plus blasted charities wanting her to increase her SDO to outrageuos amounts.
The coincidence being that all the relatives we 'd rather not speak to seem to have set their phones to "callers identity withheld"... So I was wondering if these people realise they are terminally boring so take evasive action or am I just unlucky. Humble apologies to all the charming people on CC who do this

I can't imagine why anyone would go to the bother of dialling whatever it is before the number each time they rang. Just don't pick up if it's a no number call.

We have caller id too and never pick up if number withheld.

I don't know about mobiles, but our phone is set not to recieve and gives a message telling the dialer to recal without withholding

Excellent idea, I'll check my phone instructions too. ( are you talking house phone or mobile )? I know at least two of the people concerned are not ex directory, they've just set their phone to withhold their name, presumably cos deep down they know nobody wants to speak to them and they hope it'll trick recipients to pick up the phone ... at least thats my theory ;)

You can usually request this service from your phone service provider, you may have to pay in some circumstances. I think its around 50p a month from mine.

We swapped providers about a year ago or so and are now with Car Phone Warehouse. Ever since we did that our number comes up as number with-held when we ring someone. We haven't managed to work out how to stop that happening. I rang a friend the other day and her husband picked the phone up and said - "Hi Summerdays" (well my real name), and I was surprised. Turned out he now assumes it is us when they get number withheld.

I'll excuse you from my saddo category then as in your case it was involuntary....

I've since discovered that this anonymous call barring that BT call it where people with withheld numbers are asked to redial with the withheld facility removed, bars doctors hospitals and emergency services. given that my social life consists in the main of doctor/hospital visits, I may have to put up with.:becool:
