The Invisible Cyclist

Woman in a Mazda MX5 performs a textbook overtake. She waited patiently for a gap in the traffic, and overtook safely with plenty of room. Nothing really write-home-worthy about that.

Except a little further up the road she performed another perfect overtake... of nobody. The road was completely empty. She even seemed to slow down to wait behind the apparition.

Not so much strange as bloody dangerous, riding home on 'A' road 'NSL' car starts to overtake van, drives straight at me.

????

I had lights on (flashing cateyes x 2 - still light outside though) and he just gawped at me as he drove past. I didn't anticipate him doing it as I had my head down pedalling away, and just happened to look up in time.

couple months back. Friday am about 8.20 on my way to work. Pissing down and stormy.
Naked man runs out of some bushes on my left, shouts "morning!" and crosses the road. Followed shortly after by another bloke but this time thankfully fully clothed.

Surreal. Thought I'd had lsd with my porridge.

Saw a cyclist crossing Southwark Bridge wearing something like this

Bit extreme even for London's traffic.

I know most of your experiences are on the bike. But, I think my story is worth relating. I catch the train from Edinburgh to Glasgow with my bike in full lycra gear, take my seat when the train is relatively quiet. It then stops at 3 further stops before getting to Glasgow. The seat next to me is always the last seat in the carriage to be taken. I will have people standing in the aisle but will not sit next to the 'weirdo' in full lycra. It offended me initially. I now quite like the space.

I have been taking different routes home of late just to relieve the tedium and get a bit more time on the bike. On Wednesday I had a bloke in a tricked out van (one of those that makes a pssst noise when it changes gear (turbo dump valve?)) cruise beside me until a gap opened in the traffic then accelerate madly for about 50 feet. He did that 3 times until the traffic became too heavy.

Yesterday I reached a big junction (by Temple Meads and Fowlers for those that know Bristol) and because I'd never cycled this route before I decided to dismount at the lights and recce the junction. I was verbally abused by a ped who accused me of jumping the lights! Unfortunately I reacted badly and abused her back. However, the bloke she was with just walked on, so I guess he was on my side!

This morning I saw a BMW overtake a cyclist who was overtaking a parked van whilst a WVM was coming the other way and was forced to stop. We both shook our heads at each other - White Van Man and cyclist synergy!!! Is there no end to the BMW driver arrogance (only joking, it is statistically unlikely they are all arrogant).

Strange things you see people do on your commute

Every day I see people get into a car and try to drive into London. Very strange ;)

I have been travelling the same route into work for about 5 years and never fail to see a lady of senior years jogging towards me carrying a rope dog lead.

Never ever seen a dog. I even stopped once and waited for her to pass me.

On same route a bloke who pushes his MTB towards his work of place. Maybe he is stealing bikes?

Now't strange as folk

Not a regular occurence, but i'm always amazed at the peds who will approach a pelican crossing....the road is completely empty...completely, and they will press the crossing button... and wait to cross the road.
Why ? has the H&S culture taken root so deep that a persons incapable of looking and making a decision for themselves ?
