Hi there

I've signed up to Strava on my phone and uploaded the app, etc. I don't have a cycle computer on any of my bikes. What is the best way to use Strava in the absence of having a cycle computer? Do I just use my phone, using my data?

Thanks in advance

J

Yes, simple as that.

Just press Start on Strava when you begin your ride, and Stop when you finish it.
Strava doesn't use your data unless or until you upload the ride at the end.

It actually uses very little data. I have strava on my phone and record about 300 miles a month but it doesn't seem to impact on my meagre 0.5GB of data allowance so I would say just go for it and don't worry.

So I guess if you don't press stop until you are within range of a wifi connection it doesn't use your data at all?

I don't use Strava but a smilar principle applies to uploading rides using a Garmin computer and connected phone.

Strava uses no data to record a ride. You can press Stop whenever and wherever you want. It will only upload when you press Save.

If you are a paid subscriber and make use of the tracking feature so others can watch your live progress it will use a tiny amount to periodically upload your location.

Other than that the data use will just be the background chatter used by your phone’s location services using WiFi AP lookups to assist the GPS engine.

Just a note on phone Strava - some phones will randomly shut it down thinking it's not being used, you can't always get around it with app priority settings etc. Screen on will eat your battery but otherwise it doesn't drain much power. But I ended up switching off my email app because that did drain the battery surprisingly well, annoying on all-day rides.

You don;t need to subscribe tto use the beacon feature that allows a named person to see where you are
It also wanrs them if you stop for a long time - for example if you have fallen off and are lying in a ditch unconscious - or have met a nice lady and are having a 'conversation' behind a hedge - or whatever
I use it so my wife can see when I am likely to be home in case the grandkids come round - or if I fall off or something
SO that must use up some data - not sure how much - shouldn;t be much

No, it only uploads when you press Save. That needs to be within range.
You can stop your ride and discard it if you so choose. You can stop your ride anytime.

Does that mean I can ride with data/wifi disabled and then when I get home, I can enable data/wifi then the ride will upload once I press save?

Yes but your phone will rely solely on satellite reception to determine its position while you are riding. Minimise signal loss by keeping it in your back pocket where it will have a good view of the sky. Having said that, modern phones use Galileo and Glonass as well as GPS so lack of satellites in view isn’t the problem it used to be.

Used Strava for many years without a GPS bike computer. Only stopped and got a GPS when my phone battery wasn't up to 6 hour rides. Start the recording - bung in a zip loc bag and put it in your pocket. Stop when you've finished and upload at home.

If you want a map as you're out and about - use Google maps.
You can save an area offline so you don't rely on a signal out in the wilds. Just zoom out the map til it covers your likely riding area and you can save that as offline map.
