(I mean the ones that say "High Street" and are typically attached to the side of a building or wall in cities, or 75cm off the ground elsewhere.)

Every time I go somewhere unfamiliar in London (and especially if I miss a turning and end up lost) I get frustrated by the lack of street name signs. Is it just me? The most common problem is where a minor road joins a more major road -- often, the minor road will have name signs, but the major road won't.

Yesterday, I'd have liked to know here whether Beauchamp Place led on to Brompton Road or Knightsbridge. No sign.

And whether I'd got to King's Road here.

Here is Regent Street. No sign.

And here is Tottenham Court Road. Again, no sign.

I did get confused at all these junctions, due to forgetting what direction I was going in. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

yep, annoys me too. And you have to go past most roads to see any sign.

All the more reason for good signs, I think.

Nah,someone either nicks them or hilariously graffitis over them.

In the old days we used a thing called a map, remember to wet your fingers though as the pages can be a bit dry.

I have a map (the free London cycle maps are excellent). The map is very useful a lot of the time, but it's not very useful when there's no street name signs -- how am I meant to find my position?

There's surprisingly few people outside central London, especially on backstreets, especially at night. Most of them are drunk.
If I'm going to stop I might just as well look at the map anyway, I'd like to be able to cycle along the road, see the sign ahead, and turn into the street.
