It's a shame so many people are more exercised by the idea of wardens than the anti social behaviour that they are a reaction to. My day to day life is degraded by a constant trickle of other people's low level selfishness.

I wish more people would stand up and tell the scummy minority they are out of order. People do it because "everyone else does". Well no, everyone else doesn't, and it's time we said so.

If the police were doing this, I don't think many here would have a problem with it, as this has come up in previous threads where the police have been cracking down on RLJers and pavement cyclists.

The problem here is the concept of private, unaccountable, unqualified bouncers acting on the whim of corporate rather than public interest telling people what to do.

I'd have thought that was pretty clear.

More exercised by jumped-up goons illegitimately enforcing the prejudices of motorists and businesses than by a bit of pavement cycling? Yup. I'm quite happy for actual police officers to stop pavement cyclists (with a bit of discretion - it's quite often fairly harmless), but most of the foaming about pavement cyclists and RLJers is just rationalisation for already-existing prejudice, ignorance and hatred. I rather hope I get stopped by one of these morons, just for the fun of telling them exactly how impressed I am with their orange ties...

Four in hand eh?

Don't like the idea of private security people doing this. BUT wouldn't be against PCSOs.

My first experience of a Boris Bike was being hit by it while walking on the pavement outside Lancaster Gate tube station. What I said to its hirer while he was on the ground doesn't belong on this forum.

I emailed TfL with details, including asking them if they could ban irresponsible hirers, but haven't heard back yet.

How can 'private wardens' have the authority to issue on the spot fines?

If they do it the way parking wardens are given powers by a local authority it will be legitimate unfortunately. Issue is, police have discretion. They don't gain anything by issuing tickets so they will only do it if deemed necessary. A private company will gain income from it, therefore I can see 65 year olds being given tickets for cycling on a footpath when out for their pension and papers. Anyone under 18 should be fine though.

This.

The issue isn't that pavement cyclists shouldn't be fined - they're irritating and should be. The issue is that having what is to all intents and purposes a corporate sanctioned vigilante force (and let's not mince words here, that's exactly what it is: those wardens represent business interests only) as enforcers. Law and justice require both due process and proportionality. The police and courts ensure that, at least to an extent. But a private goon force lacks transparency and accountability, and what is in a business's best interest is unlikely to be in the public interest.
