I don't get this Street View.
What's in it for Google ?
Are they to release the next gen Sat nav software or are they thinking we all want to sit on a pc piddling about looking for a street we see everyday ?

There's a lot that Google do that they don't immediately seem to get much out of. The new 'Wave' thingummy, which they're making open source, Chrome, Earth, SketchUp, Calendar - in fact MOST of what they do doesn't bring in the money.
But a lot of it encourages people back to the search site, which is ridiculously good at bringing in the advertising cash. Streetview has sponsored links on it too.

The google business model is based on 'fat tail' distributions - make lots and lots of small amounts of money. And where where talking lots, we're talking gogolian.
Anything that draws content from their servers draws revenue from their advertisers. And while the cost of adding new content is less than the revenue the model rolls on. Letting users 'mash' services togther for free simply generates content. It is a powerful model that utilises an evolutionary approach. Awe-inspiring but scary too.
