Stripped thread

Anyone got any ideas on how to remove a crank with a stripped thread?

I used a combination of riding around (carefully) with the bolt out and gentle encouraging with a hammer. Not sure if this is recommended, given my crank was stripped , I wasn't too worried about it

Or take it to your LBS, they will have a crank-puller that doesnt rely on those threads.

I've tried the gentle encouragement approach as the bottom bracket and the crank now need replacing but no joy.

Crank puller went on fine with no cross thread but then as i started tightening it up instead of pulling crank off i was slowly stripping the thread instead. Other side came off a treat

Painful. Can I just say, there are lots of crank pullers which have pretty sh!tty threads. Park, VAR and Campagnolo tools have great threads. The cheapo ones like Cycloand the one Halfoids sell don't.

One other point whilst I was "encouraging" was to rest the bike down on the side of the crank involved but ensure the bb crank axle was supported against the floor (I used an old socket resting on a block of wood ) that mean when you hit the crank arm downwards, the BB has nowhere to go and you get more leverage. If that makes sense?

The crank puller is the only thing thats come out of this unscathed unlike the crank.

Hacksaw. Done the same thing myself, but with a Park puller. Think the cranks threads were knackered anyway. Cut into the crank, and when through to the axel it will come off

wire wool,put some arnd the puller and scrw it in, make sure it gets pulled in not just bunched up at the end of the thread, the steel wool is pushed into the softer ali and grips well.

It's a bit of a project bike anyway so if the wire wool trick doesn't work i will take it along to my LBS. Let some professionals loose on it for once!
