Strong bike for BIG lady

Saddle recommendations tend to be as individualised as bottoms are! After my first 50 mile ride I went (walking, not riding!) the very next day to the LBS to get something, anything, to replace the not-women-specific stock saddle that the bike came with. I ended up with a Selle Italia Lady Gel Flow (I think) which has done me fine for many miles since, including a 120-ish on the back of a tandem (which is a particular test of saddle comfort, as I discovered!) on the 2010 Dun Run. But it may not work for everyone!

Oaf on a Bike
I have the mens version of Giant Roam, took my weight when i was over 20 stone with no problems. The Crosstrail and the Roam are incredibly similar bikes with very similar spec. Both tend to have very good deals online if you or a friend can check/set up the bike, it might be worth paying a bit more to a shop for the assistance youd get. Im not sure if its worth looking at mens (unisex) bikes, as it can give you more options, but id imagine a tall woman could be a lot more leggy than a tall man, but not have as much reach.

Theres always deals around on cycling stuff. Limited sizing but this looks decent to me http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/pro...s/helmets-accessories/helmets-womens-specific

Saddles are a very personal choice thing, im not yet a believe that skinny saddles are good for new, heavy riders on more upright seated bikes with a lot of weight on that one point.

The biggest downside i found of being a heavier cyclist was id puncture several times as often as my much lighter friends on very similar bikes/tyres, so puncture proof/resistant tyres are a godsend.

Also, well done on your weight loss so far

Hello!
I've recently lost quite a lot of weight, but i'm still at the 20st mark, 6ft and recently moved I'm thinking to save money by starting to cycle to work. The journey is largely pavement but there is about 1/2 mile thats 'off-road' for lack of better words!

Can anyone recommend any bikes/tires/seats/helmets the works?

ideally i don't really want to spend more than 4/500 on the whole package and i would be happy to mooch on ebay to get a 'starter' bike but i don't know which ones would be best for the journey and for handling the weight!

Assistance would be massively appreciated!

Hi, hope your all sorted by now as it looks like youve had plenty of feedback but just a quick note to say, cyclocross bike sunds like your perfect solution in both bike suitability and cost. Now is we are into summer, the price of cross bikes will be significanlt lower so you should be able to pick up a half decent Giant within easy reach of you budget.
