It's a bit more complicated than that...
And as @mmmmartin will know we have successfully used a shipping agency to transport a box back from France - I think they used UPS. If anyone wants details, let me know.

It wasn't cheap, but it was a damned sight more convenient than taking the box on the train.

By any other words its a bike box you can pick up at any LBS.

I have never tried to take a bike box on a plane. Does it fit through their machine?

The article does say this would be hard to use for airline travel as the box is far heavier than a standard bike box and airlines are strict on their weight limits.

I would nt like to put a "carbon" frame in the cardboard box to travel via a airline...
25 kg is the limit for most airlines. bike+hard shell case is around 18kg

Depends on the bike, a lot of bikes on flights are of the touring variety and will hit your 18kg minus box and any other luggage

I Was Quoting a carbon frame and a box at 18kg (Mine) .... But yes a tourer will be more in kg extra ££ on the weight limit
But I still would nt put a tourer(if i had one) in the box above .

I have never used a bike bike box of any type on a flight. I have a very thin bike bag made of spinnaker cloth. We travel with our bikes at least twice a year and have never had a problem.

When we get to the airport we set our bikes up, fold the bags and store them and pedal off. I wouldn't know what to do with a box. But we use touring bikes and not road bikes.

I am a fan of the clear plastic bag.
In Spain in October we bought some 100 litre bin bags and parcel tape and slit the bags to make large squares of plastic, then taped them together to make huge bags that covered the bikes. One needs to do this to put them in the luggage area on Spanish long distance coaches. You could easily do this for flying: the spinnaker cloth is a good idea although you do have to carry it. Plastic bags and tape cost hardly anything.
