I'm sat indoors waiting for comet to deliver a new fridge/freezer. I need to get out in the garage and sort out changing some wheels on my winter trainer so I can get out this aftenoon 'cos the back rim disintegrated on it yesterday (luckily doing 8mph up hill, not 35mph down!).
That's the second open pro rim I've had split like that, I've got a spare pair of campag protons but it's just about impossible to get winter tyres on them, so I'll probably service a pair of tiagra/ma3's I've got knocking about and use them 'till I can get some new rims. Any recommendations to go on 32 hole dura ace hubs?

No advice on wheels Dave but did you ever do a write up of your Provence tour? It's my destination in the summer so any suggestions would be welcome.

Hi Rich, no didn't write it up but did do a bit for the club newsletter about the Bonnette and Ventoux climbs which there's a link to at www.sotonia.co.uk We only dipped into eastern Provence as we did a loop from Nice via the southern Alps. Where are you starting/finishing?

I'm actually sorting out the ferries at moment for our summer trip, we'll be cycling home (via St.Malo) from Spain but I'm mulling over Bilbao or Santander. Brittany ferries are cheaper, quicker and nicer than P&O but it adds on about 75 miles of quite hard riding.

I'm not sure yet. We may get the bike bus down and get it back from a different place. Grenoble -Spain maybe.
I'll have a look at the link.

I know how you feel - I'm sat indoors waiting for DHL to come and pick up a box with over 70 cycling videos in it for threebikesmcginty. He'll be offering them up to the CycleChat 'library' after he has watched them.

I have some Protons and also find it hard to get certain tyres on them Globalti (formerly Rigid Raider) swears by dusting with talc before trying to mount stubborn tyres but I haven't tried it yet.

Sorry, I can't really offer any advice on replacement rims.

BTW - I don't suppose you happen to know where I could get Proton spares do you? The cones (is that what they are they called?) in my rear hub are pitted and need to be replaced.

Colin,
Might be worth trying Parkers for the proton spares, a new UK campag agent started up a couple of years ago but I'm not sure if they're still going.
The only tyres I've found relatively easy to fit on campag wheels are vittoria open corsa's but at £70 a pair they're a bit pricey for winter, any other suggestions?

Swiss DT 1.2's? I'd say look at the 1.1's but there were issues a few years back about the eyelets not being strong enough.

Re the Cones - Mercian Cycles stock some old Campag gear -might be worth a call as even if they don't have it they will point you to someone who can help.

Thanks. I'll have to sort the hub out before the end of the winter or I could end up going into another summer without a best bike. Mind you, we keep having summers which aren't summers so it hasn't been that much of a loss! :becool:

How far away is your garage from your house then ?

Cant you leave a note on the door saying "in garage please shout" ?

The garage is about 800m from the house behind the stable block and tennis court and it's the staff's day off.

Well they eventually turned up about 5pm but as mrs d finished work at 12 I was able to go and get some vittoria rubino's (only £19 for the pair) from DHC and fit the protons. So ready to roll again as soon as it stops chucking down.

The garage is actually down the end of the garden and were in the middle of the terrace;)

I'm sat (and hanging on) on a ship in 7 metre seas. Want to swap?
