thought I'd woken up in a foriegn country! kmph? whats that I made 14.5MPH avg on my winter's at 45psi... though the opposite way I did less well , 9.7mph avg... still it was the first time I'd climbed on the Steel single speed bike, and the ratio I'm running seems hard work... still not shy of that!

I was going slow on purpose as it was my first time on snow since i was young. I wanted to get the feel of the bike/tyres. Also remembering that using front brake with cable disc brakes in the snow is NOT the best idea

In the current flurry of glorious weather I've run Marathon Winters. Great on roads were there's patches of ice, pretty rubbish on more than a 1cm of snow. I found even compacted snow on country lanes/briddleways too much for the marathons. what tire's do other people run in these conditions?

With the Marathon Winter tyres, the trick is to let a lot of air out, down to around 30-35 psi when riding on snow.

so thats, I made 23kph avg over 10km, running 3 bar pressure on a 66cm wheel :P

£80 for a set of ice spike pro's, folding bead... nice! (I did read it right?) that's £40 cheaper! You've used this outlet before? I am always a bit skeptical about ordering from abroad... the last time I ordered something from Germany it took the shop (not this outlet) 6 months to send anything and when they did they put a different address on it and no name at all! luckily the invoice inside the parcel had my name/address and the person who received the parcel brought it to my house! To boot they hadn't even filled the order... was a real hassle.

You did read it right
No fear, they are a good outlet, used them twice. Others on here have used them too without problems ... that's how I got to know about the website, by reading loads of threads about tyres.

33km at an average of less than 15kph and my legs are still killing me today.

Just pulled the trigger on the basic spiked version, Schwalbe Winter Spike, less than £40 a pair delivered

no issues here either with the Schwalbe Marathon Winters in snow. been out almost every day on them (except yesterday where I took the road bike instead, though was the only road bike out (again)) and have had great grip from them even in snow deep enough to be leaving pedal marks either side of the tyre marks. Good grip on the gradients I had to do as well - couple of short sharp & steep inclines with bends in them - the don't cycle through here because theres a road at the bottom type bends where a few railway bridges are out.
Did find it slightly easier than riding on a beach on a fully laden tourer, so some previous experience may have helped, but it is hard work than the semi-slicks I usually have on the mtb.

Yeah after I dropped the tire pressure they were fine. Not as hardcore as you but as you say experience helps. It was also the first time I rode snow clipped in, so I think that unnerved me a bit too. Unafraid of them being 'hard work', as that sort of thing always does me good

Thanks, Gave it lots of thought and ordered a set of the regular ice spikers to give me confidence to get out adventuring further and visiting family in such conditions. Of course I'll have to wait a year or two to try them, but I like to be prepared.

I have found my SMW to be fine in snow. I have them at about 80psi. The problems arise trying to ride through snow that has been churned up by plebs which then freezes solid so you get a very difficult ride as it is impossbile to ride without being thrown off course by frozen ice ruts. Earlier in the week I had quite a few scary moments riding at 15-16mph suddenly trying to correct a slide then sliding rapidly in the opposite direction then back again like a pendulum.Fortunately I haven't crashed yet, but it is pretty seat of your shorts riding and flippin' exhausting. But normal untrodden snow the tyres are fine up to a depth of about 10cm.
