Thanks for the thread, I know what Santa will be bringing for my girls
Which film would you recommend we start with (ages 7 & 12)?

I've got a boxed set of NASU, which is an anime cycling film that I'll sell if anybody is interested.

For 7 year-olds it would have to be My Neighbour Tottoro, followed by Ponyo and Kiki's Delivery Service.

For 12 year-olds, I would go with Nausica then Princess Mononoke, bearing in mind that the latter is a lot more uncompromising.

BTW, are here any Ghibli films that have an exclusively English cast ? (just wondered)

No. They all have a Japanese vocal cast in the originals but many of them had English vocal versions done with a Hollywood cast (who will generally be Americans). Ghibli have never made an English-language film.

I LOVE the Cat returns! Miaow!

I do too. It's a little odd for some people!

For those who aren't familiar, the plot is basically: Girl saves cat and is then taken to the Kingdom of Cats and forced to marry the Prince of Cats...

Ghibli have a definite thing for cats.

I'm a big fan of anime, it allows so much possibilities!

anyhoo, not so long ago we watched Howl's moving castle and my kids LOVED it so now we own on dvd.
Howls
Spirited Away
Kiki's delivery service
Nausicaa valley of the wind
Princess Mononoke
Porko Rosso
Laputa: Castle in the sky

next on my list is My Neighbour Totoro.
btw stay clear of Pon Poko with the kids, giant racoons bouncing around the place on their testicles was disturbing enough as an adult...

I find (older) kids love the testicles. IME, it's only the adults who seem to have problems with this. It's the ecopolitical themes that are actually more 'adult' in the film.

If I was immature, I could make a joke out of that

I havent seen any other studio Ghibli movies (that I am aware of) other than My Neighbour Totoro and I love Totoro!

Me and my girlfriend are in the process of learning how to and then crocheting a few of the characters from it, Totoro himself of course plus Neko Bus, Chu Toto (Totoro's little blue friend), Chibi Toto (Totoro's tiny white friend) and a couple of susa-ataris (the black creatures).
