Yes, cyclists have the health of some one 10 years younger but only live on average 2 years more so therefore premature death as a result of RTAs may well be the reason as we won't have died of ill health ..........

So there's a discrepancy of 8 years lost some where.

The point is that risk could be reduced without banning anything. People who have Advanced Driver Training are much less likely to be involved in a collision. There will always be the human frailty element to consider but a lot more could be done by improving driver/rider training, Enforcement and road design without greatly inconveniencing anyone:smile:. There are very few genuine accidents on the roads.
If a 747 was crashing with the loss of all on board every 2 months would we all accept that as part of the natural risk - I suspect not.

Crankarm, really, can't you do better than simply slagging off the CTC in such an unreasonable manner? The CTC certainly has its faults, but overall it's an awesome organisation that does us all a lot of good.

Possibly im looking at this negatively and forgetting that cycling has possibly kept me going longer than had I lead an "alternative" lifestyle.

Back on topic, I'm just sick of the perception that cyclists are these crazy mavericks who take their lives in their hands every time they hit the road.

My friends seem to see me as the massive risk taker among them because I cycle even though many of them will get trashed and travel home alone or they take drugs or they do other silly things that I don't do.

That assumes that there's a magic single age at which you die, when it's not as clear cut as that.

You can have the health of someone averagely younger than you, but still have a heart attack or stroke due to a freak event. Or get cancer, or any of a number of non age related diseases that even cycling won't magically protect you from completely.

It's all about averages, and averages are funny things - apart from anything else, there are 3 different types of average...

Re the BBC Breakfast piece this morning...

I especially liked it when the journalist referred to a cyclist being in an HGV's blind spot (the area immediatley around the cab) as the "cyclist hiding".

That's exactly what they're trying to do.

Ho hum boring BM ;). Just critical of their "safety in numbers" campaign when quite clearly they have a financial interest in recruiting new comers to cycling promoting themselves as the mainstream face of cycling when they are errr.... not. Of course you are a member or official of the said organisation no doubt so you would be supportive of them which your posts indicate very strongly ;). They have never done anything for me on the cycling front either as a member or not. But this thread is not about the CTC, so I finish here.

So you mean, they're wrong because they've got an interest in being right?
