I'm pretty sure that even if a crossing has no barriers, it's signposted beforehand. Add in the fact that there was a train there, and unless it was pitch black, pea soup thick fog AND a blizzard, the driver was a total numpty. On the phone maybe? Rootling about in the glovebox for a sweetie? Fixated on his satnav?
Trouble is, it'll go down as another level crossing accident, with more cries of "something must be done!" Anything, except perhaps improve the standard of some people's driving...
