That day is a long way away. We will probably be extinct before it happens.

True.

But you can't deny that we do have an extraordinary appetite to kill one another.
Speak for yourself. I'm just a cuddly old thing who loves everyone.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
I have just read that the US is spending billions on a robot that can hunt and kill by itself. No doubt other countries are also doing the same. Meanwhile, thousands die each day of cancer and other dreadful diseases. I hope beings on other planets are not as stupid as we are.
I think this is the report you're referring to.
http://www.afr.com/technology/robot...n-pose-a-dilemma-for-pentagon-20161025-gsam4o

$18bn over 3 years on various military technologies, include robot killers.

Meanwhile you might want to review this table:
https://report.nih.gov/categorical_spending.aspx

Annual US spending on cancer: over $6bn. Or $18bn over 3 years. Plus the same again on each of biotech and neuroscience and genetics, twice as much on unspecified clinical research, nearly as much on infectious disease, two-thirds as much on women's health, half as much on HIV and AIDS and on Paediatrics and on aging - and many many more I haven't mentioned. And that's just in the US.

LIke you I think that any pound spent on military research is a pound wasted - although I have to acknowledge that some of those pounds have civilian applications (I do, after all, use GPS). But it helps before ranting to get facts straight.

It depends how you define success.
I'm sure dinosaurs spent most of their time trying to kill each other and protect their territory, it is what every species on earth does.
We are just very good at it, sadly.

is it not a good thing that a robot can hunt and kill without endangering it's operator? So long as there are the likes of Hitler, Mussolini or Blair in this planet then it's not a bad tool to have.

And then some ISIS hacker works out how to take over the control network and orders the robots to kill infidels instead ...
