Ive had a look at the offerings at Halfords (didn't grab me) Decathlon (like the 5.3) and Evans (Spesh Hardrock) but I'm after some other ideas that I haven't thought of as yet. Need to perform 2 functions - be a fun ride for me to dash about the local trails, muddy woodland etc on, plus be able to fit a kids seat on for family rides. So hardtail is a must.

The 5.3 at Decathlon is a very good bike in that price range.

Didn't the carrera subway take your fancy? It a hybrid but 26in wheels and a hard tail too... A great bike for both trails and fun rides

The B'Twin has received consistently glowing reviews and is bang on budget. Why look elsewhere if you like it?

Thanks guys

The Rockrider 5.3 was nice, liked the lock out fork and the discs but I want to make sure I've got all bases covered before I buy. I was all set to go and get it but two things worry me 1) at that price point, am I better off not getting discs? 2) I've heard you have trouble fitting a child seat to bikes with rear discs. Also, the Spesh is a very nice bike (but getting hard to find at that price pint as it last seasons model)

The Subway was too hybrid for me, not right for the riding it want to do by myself at all.
