Have you ever thought of going back to college? Mature students tend to be more focused and are better at investigating all the ins and outs of a subject. It doesn't need to blow the budget either. There are those that will lend a hand. Job prospects would improve significantly.

I am having a little laugh witcha! I do have a degree and all that and I am currently a mature student, studying for a second degree in a completely different subject having had a mid-life crisis at the age of 28 and deciding that I didn't like what I was doing (previously engineering, now psychology).

Lol... if I told you what the title was... (is.. flippin' heck, I'm talking in past tense already!) I'd lose my anonymity It's about how to design management plans that take account of the environment, wildlife, economy and human needs altogether, instead of looking at each individually. (Are you all asleep yet?)

Anyways; it took me 3 weeks short of 3 years, plus a one year masters. So it's an odd feeling; both relief and then also 'oh shite... that's 7 years of university education which has been my life, and erm... now what?' I always knew I wanted to do a PhD and now I have... I haven't thought any further ahead than this! Just relaxing and recovering for a while. Doing a PhD can wipe out your self-esteem and confidence, and make you forget what you believe in and what makes you tick. I've been struggling with that bit for the last year and thought it was just me, but having spoken to a lot of others they feel the same. Time for a holiday...!!!

I think my viva will be in February sometime. I intend to put in the hours for that when I know exactly when it is.

Well done! I remember handing it in being a bit of an anti climax. I handed it over to the girl at the desk and she just about managed to raise a grunt, never mind a smile or a well done!

That is EXACTLY what it was like! Did we have the same girl??? I felt worried she was going to lose them, she was that lackadaisical. Also 'cos it's only me finishing; at least at school after exams evryone is celebrating! I got back to the office and everyone is still plugging away at theirs...

Ah well... PARTY!!!!

Originally, I gather, it was a way of making sure that the person named had actually written the thing - hence 'viva' - meeting the living person.

It's when you 'defend' your thesis to a panel of examiners. They ask you questions on it and so on. Best case scenario, they're already happy you've gone about it all correctly and produced the best work you can, and pass you (even better when they tell you at the start). Worst case, they think the whole thing needs redoing. In between, varying degrees of questioning/terror.

I'm really quite glad I won't be going through it now.
