True. Maybe it is just the lack of imagination thing.

That said, I do think driving standards are getting worse. There seems to be more tailgating, less indicating, less use of mirrors. And then there's the texting...

The problems were always there, you are just becoming more aware of it.

Well no, to be strictly accurate about it, there was no texting when I learned to drive. There were no mobile phones.

I've been driving for 27 years, some of that in light goods vehicles, some in minibuses, some in a car, some in a small electric truck. Plus of course, I've cycled a lot in that time. I think my awareness of other people's driving has always been the same. Yes, there have always been bad drivers, but I do think there are more now.

Another thing I think is causing a worsening in standards is the 'safety' of modern cars. Cocooned in crumple zones and carpet, 70 doesn't feel very fast. In my old Mini, 70 felt lethal!

I do think some people simply don't have the imagination to understand what can happen to them. Or they thing it's like a computer game, where you just get to reload.

My wife's a teaching assistant in nursery and she hear5s the kids talking about computer games they shouldn't even know about.

Plenty of times whilst they're playing in school she hears them say, "get up, you come back to life after I've killed you."

I've driven on that road and can tell you from experience that Belgian drivers are nutters.

I was driving on the M6 yesterday in torrential rain doing a steady and safe 50 - 55 in lane 1. The combination of road spray and darkness made for very poor visibility. I lost count of the number of idiots blasting along in lane 3, the so called 'fast lane' at crazy speeds for the conditions. But as crashes only happen to other people they'd be fine.

That was some suicide manouvre, at at least 60mph, pulling from the outside lane, unsighted, across 3 lanes of traffic in between 3 lorries.

I hate drivers who leave it until the last minute to pull off the slip road. Total nobbers, and they are the ones who cause crashes for other people.

What an amazing testament to the skills of the people who design and build modern cars! Back when I were a lad anyone who'd been in a crash like that wouldn't just have not survived with a few broken bones, they'd have had to be removed from the scene with a broom and a hose.

I take it that was filmed from a truck, very lucky for the car 'driver' to survive that and also not cause a multi vehicle pile-up.

+1. The driver of the lorry with the camera did well to hold his line, given that there was another lorry to his left and a queue of vehicles to his right. Thankfully it was another lorry at the back of the stationary queue which took the hit, rather than some poor motorcyclist.
