The Latitude and Thinkpad laptops are of high quality and much standard employee issue.
Thus the glut of used bargains available.

Blimey, 14 posts before a disagreement about which is the one true religion is pretty good going.

Jeez I never even mentioned Apple until challenging the usual prejudice, and literally recommended a Windows laptop on post 4.
I used to have a similar attitude, until I actually used one seriously for an extended period.

Sorry, nonsense. I thought similarly until I used a MacBook Pro for over a year in an organisation where almost everything was on M365. The whole shebang: Office, Teams, Outlook and Sharepoint. Both web and desktop apps. All fine and TBH I had fewer problems than I had on the previous corporate Windows laptop.
They're not the cheapest option but quality and longevity they're up there in VFM terms.

I would agree 100%. I spent my working life (or at least the portion of it when Microsoft existed) in a Microsoft environment. In retirement I switched to Apple. No way would I consider a return to Windows.

Honestly if she isn't a computer whizz and just needs to use MS Office and the Internet etc, Chrome Books are pretty impressive. Cheap, easy to use, all updates are seamless in the background and they are instant to switch on.

You don't lose your work as it's all in the cloud (you can set up so you can work offline if you don't have a wifi connection)

It's android not windows so you are using the web versions of applications. My daughter got one for school and she is so much happier with it than with her old Yoga laptop.

It seems granddad may be defunct !
Her Bro who lives elsewhere has offered her a freebie.
He works in the fraud dept of a large bank so gets silly offers.......turns out he is offering her a high end laptop. I have no other information.
Many thanks to all for the excellent advice.

£2000 longevity versus £150 longevity VFM?

Attempting to compare a brand new high end laptop to a heavily (ab)used ex corporate low to mid tier machine is quite ludicrous.

A brand new MacBook Air is £1000. You've got to go to the MB Pro, either 14" with M4 Pro chip, or 16" to hit 2k.
But a brand new Macbook can be reliably expected to get 10 years use on a supported OS. 6-7 years of feature updates and another 3 of security updates. Apple provide service and parts for 5 years minimum after a laptop is last sold.

For a slightly more realistic comparison you can get a Macbook Air M1 13.3" refurbed for around £300 if you shop around. Yes it's double that price (which is probably a loss leader anyway, they probably want shut of the stock), but a far superior machine.

Intel i5 8th gen is the last cpu supported by Windows 11. Will it still be supported for the next version? Who knows. The performance of the M1 will frankly pee all over it, and do so in total silence as it's fanless.

The Latitude's screen is a low end 1366x768 resolution. M1's retina screen is 2560x1600 pixels and looks luscious.
Lastly the experience of using them is just soo much nicer.

Many are near unused. Staff have them to enable use on the move and working from home.
One I bought 2 or so years ago was 99% new, looking 100% pristine. Best buys are just when they get a big batch and do a fasf cleardown.
From Vicksters thread, there is still an Elitebook at £180. Just slightly heavier. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/326606668404

Also bear in mind, courses have purchase guidance/requirements. It is remotely possible even a Chromebook would also be acceptable.

For a teaching degree a Chrome book is likely to be fine. It's only if you need specialist or heavy duty software that you need a full windows laptop (or MacBook if they support the software).

Funnily enough, this just popped up on my daily hotukdeals email. Looks a stonking amount of laptop for the money. You could argue the RAM is a little on the low side at 8Gb but is more than adequate for student work, and someone not into gaming.

Seems like Granddad is in favour again as she was let down with the freebie.
A question.........
The advert you show gives a price of £229 but when I open the link it shows £500ish.
Which one is correct ??

Both. The Argos price is £500ish but the "hot UK Deals" price (now expired) was £229.

Just bought my younger daughter one of these:-

So far she is very happy with it. It started instantly and updates are automatic, with almost no reboot requirement as it runs android.
She is preferring this approach to a windows laptop. So far she isn't finding Chrome OS restrictive as it supports MS Office and all her major apps like Netflix, etc

Older daughter was more expensive. She went for one of these two years ago (was £750) and bought a Surface keyboard and case.
