Our cat (Wolfie) is nearly 13 and finally starting to realise that discretion may be the greater part of valour.

Last month he was staring out of the window overlooking our garden and saw a family of 6 Magpies on the bird bath. Without a second's hesitation he was straight through the catflap and into full-speed attack mode racing down the lawn.

However, the Magpies (no doubt emboldened by their massive numerical advantage and sharp pointy beaks) viewed the oncoming black and white furred exocet with what can best be described as phlegmatic disdain.

From my 20 yard distance I could sense the shame in Wolfie as he started thinking "...oh crap!, they're not flying off, what am I going to do now?". He then visibly slowed his pace to make sure he didn't get there too soon and the Magpies very causally decided to saunter off in a "... we were going to go to stretch our wings now anyway, it's got nothing to do with you, furrball" type attitude, by which time Wolfie had pretty much slowed to a walk to avoid meeting with the last one as it took off.

He then strutted back to the house like the conquering hero and resumed his nap on the back of the sofa.

When they returned 10 minutes later his response was a few baleful glances, minor hissing and then falling asleep. I could see by the eyes occasionally opening and the flicking of his tail that he was feigning though!
