Having had success introducing my good lady to rugby via the 6 Nations last year, I thought I'd introduce her to gridiron via the spectacle of the Superbowl last night. I vaguely keep tabs on what's happening in the game courtesy of having lived Stateside for several years, and while I don't really care for the game I've always enjoyed the their showpiece event.

In terms of the game, it didn't disappoint as the Eagles completely outplayed the Chiefs which I'm pleased about. If someone hasn't used the headline "Mahowned" I'll be disappointed.

My viewing companion didn't seem to understand the seriousness of the occasion and was more amused that the first Eagles touchdown was referred to as a "Tush Push", which prompted a lot of giggling. I pointed out that it was also referred to as a "Brotherly Shove" which only resulted in more laughter. And when a player was referred to as "The Belly Button Tickler" I knew the commentators had lost the room.

I had thought she might have enjoyed it more as she has ADHD, and the constant changing of players might have put her into a hyper-focus mode, but the opposite was true. I was also wrong in thinking she might have been impressed that there's a player who's sole job is to kick the ball, but that was met with,

"There's more than one Little Kicker in rugby, what's wrong with these guys?"

So I'm sorry gridiron, I have failed to win you another casual fan.

I wish you had convinced me to watch gridiron two days earlier.

I've tried, tried, and tried to,get into it, but too mich standing around and not enough action. It's like a game of golf for people who like wearing helmets.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from, it's just part of the game that you need to accept or it's never going to appeal, much like baseball I guess; I don't see a way of speeding either up.

Ice hockey might be more you're thing? All killed, no filler.

I was once approached and asked to play ice hockey, but being unable to skate and having no desire to learn made the answer a fait accompli.

Yep 2 hours of adverts, with some prancing about in between

It really isn't.

I've stayed up for the Superbowl for god knows how many years now (must be at least 25), always taking the day after off work but this was one where I felt I was doing it more out of habit rather than for the enjoyment of the game. Chiefs three-peat? Ugh. The Eagles again? Meh. Decided I'd root for Philly (even when I'm neutral on both teams, I always have to pick one to get behind) but I'd do it half-heartedly.

But I'm glad I did go through with it - that was a trouncing of epic proportions and I'll admit I did leap off my chair and cheer when that Pick 6 happened! Still think a defensive player should have got MVP - yes, Hurts did play well, but the D-line was the star of the show.

The way that the Eagles were able to put only 4 into the line and yet still consistently collapse the pocket was a heck of a thing to see. Shaped the whole course of the game.

Anything that reverts to Latin (numerals) is a sine qua non for me. Didn't quite keep up with the linga franca but nil desperandum.

Don't let one viewers immaturity deter you. It's a lot of fun when you get into it. There are some seriously impressive athletes involved, and if you can get past the endless droning on about stats it's very enjoyable, or at least I think so.

The older I get, the more I'm impressed with types of athletic prowess that I would have shunned in my younger days. I discovered hip-hop rope skipping recently and can't see why I can't get into something that 300 million Americans can understand. I'll give it a go with an open mind.
