I've found some amazing sub-tenner bottles of red in my local independent wine shop (LWS?) but sometimes it's not possible to buy local so I grab a bottle from a supermarket.

The co-op very occasionally seems to buy a few container loads of an exceptional wine that they'll punt out for a fiver a bottle but it's rare, whereas if you get half a pointer in the right direction the big supermarkets can have some genuinely* good offers on.

So what exceptional wines have you found (for under a tenner) recently? Can you put your finger on why the wine was exceptional?

I need a bottle of red for tonight, but I also thought this could turn into a useful resource

Aldi, spend a fiver.

I've got to admit to being a huge wine fan and tend to consume 3-4 bottles per week.

£10 for a bottle of wine is a huge amount these days. I often find crackers for £5ish.

I often go for Australian Shiraz or temprinllo. In fact it's hard to find a bad bottle of temprinillo. A very solid grape variety.

I tend to ignore the Bordeaux wines or anything too oakey. They tend to be too dry.

Why not try a Pinot noir tonight? Very drinkable wine.

I've spotted a couple of wines with Decanter awards in Aldi so I have been wondering!
I've never had a bad bottle of wine from aldi that cost a fiver or more. Which is more than can be said for any other supermarket I've tried.

That said, my local wine merchant (avery's) has an excellent selection from £6.

The local shop has drop dead astounding wines for around the £7 mark.

I've just realised it's an Lidl near us, not an Aldi.

A few weeks back we found a Rose in Tesco for £3.49 and it was rather good. We went back and bought the last 3 bottles in the shop  It was called 'something' Hill I think. I have rootled about in the glass recycling but the bottles must have gone to the bottle bank on the last trip, so I can't get the exact name.
Not a wine buff by any stretch of the imagination but I know what I like.

A Geordie who retired to France bought a small vineyard and now comes back to Farmer's Markets in the Hexham/ Morpeth area and sells his red and rose [from a van blanc] for about £5 a bottle.... it's proper vin de pays and lovely!
