With all due respect to the victim and his family what amazes me is that scientists say that the shark population is being decimated year after year. Yet they also say that attacks on humans are more frequent. They will only get me if they learn to walk on land!

It was a bull shark which has a bit of a reputation as an aggressive shark... but the chap in question has done it many times before, just this time one of the sharks decided to have a bump and gave him a little love bite.

It could be that overfishing is depleting the shark's natural foodsource, causing them to find food that they normally wouldn't eat.

But I really wouldn't worry about being the victim of a shark attack, the odds are less than being struck by lightning.

In fact, I found this, which suggests that shark attacks are pretty stable.

I bow to your greater research though my point is still valid. If the number of attacks is stable and the number of sharks is diminishing then the number of attacks per shark population is increasing. I'm still not going anywhere near open water!!
I think the general concensus was that as more people use the sea for recreation then the number of human/shark interactions increases.

Fair enough, but I really don't think you've got anything to worry about.
