Great for racing or just for wanting the best performance in shifting terms (YMMV but I found 10 speed really, really crisp - both campag and shimano - compared to the 8/9 I run), but no other reason to change other than if you end up totally stumped for spares/parts.... but that tends to be more of a campag problem..

For maximum durability: 8 speed chain & cassette / Shimano mechs - operated by a 10 speed Campag shifter (just use the limit screws to lock out last click top & bottom)

That's my audax bike setup.... bar end shifters more durable though... those campag shifters have a bad habit of destroying gear cables; fraying cable pricking me in the hand through the hoods has happened twice in the last year or so. For £2 though, just changing it every 6 months or so works.

Really? You must have been unlucky. I've ridden nothing but Campag Ergos ever since they first came out and I have never had a frayed cable anywhere.
