Apparently you can help those 'in need' by paying for a 2nd coffee in addition to the one you will drink, and someone in need can come into the shop and get a free coffee.

Given that the coffees in such places seem to be the same price as a packet of sandwiches, and the blurb mentions 'the homeless', wouldn't it be better to let the recipients decide what they want to spend 'their' £2-3 on? If you really are homeless and penniless, surely food would be more important than a swanky coffee?

It is better than nothing!

Somewhere warm to go for half an hour with a hot drink vs sat out on the street with no hot drink...

Personally I think it is a good idea and would put a cup aside if I were to ever go to one of these places. May even pay for a sandwich as well.

When I donate some cash to someone on the street, I fully expect them to decide what to buy with it.
If I had the ability to buy a suspended drink/food, the offer is there for whoever needs one to make use of it. It is not the same as handing a cup to someone instead of the cash.

Absolutelly ^^ But at least someone else benefits from this kind of marketing rather than just the retailer. They make a profit, someone "in need" gets a free hot drink!

I'd make them drink it in a doorway though.
